Just Do It
Dear Parents:
Thank you for your help with our last IB Unit: The School of Rock. Our students learned many ways that rocks are used, and enjoyed fieldtrips to Kennecott Copper and Momentum Rock Climbing Wall. The summative projects helped them demonstrate their knowledge and creativity.
Our next unit: Just Do it, is going to investigate how choices influence our health. We will be studying health and safety issues, as well as how to make good choices. We have been invited to attend a musical program that is all about living a healthy lifestyle. Our trip will be next Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 10-12 noon, at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Theater in Salt Lake. There will be no charge for this trip. However, it is very important that we do receive a signed permission note to take your child on the trip. As always, your child should wear a dress uniform on this day. (red shirt).

Second Grade Rock Unit
We are studying rocks. The students have brought in their collections, and we are having a great time sorting them, and looking carefully at how they are alike or different. We will study how rocks are formed, how rocks are used, how people view rocks from different perspectives, etc.
As a culminating project, each child will prepare an exhibit, or poster to highlight one aspect of rocks. (For example: A poster might show sedimentary rocks have stripes, or how igneous rocks are formed from volcanoes. A collection might show pictures of how rocks are used in everyday life. A sort might be created to show one attribute of rocks. Rocks could be used to create a piece of jewelry or art.)
The main criteria is that the kids think outside the box, and bring their own personalities to this project. They need to create something that shows they have an interesting way to view rocks. Please help them
practice presenting the project orally. Students may not print information from the internet and paste to their project. However, they can print pictures from the internet and attach to their project. All information needs to be in the student’s own words and reflective of their understanding of the topic. These projects will be presented on Monday, November 9.
Please discuss this with your child, and help them get the materials needed to complete this assignment.
The students will be creating their posters and preparing their presentations in class the week of Nov. 2-6. Please send any pictures or research notes that they will need. It would be helpful if you could send a poster board with them by next Monday.

Vetrans' Day Project
Second Grade Families,
Here is your soldier along with their list of needs, any restrictions and a short list of what NOT to send. (There is a picture with the posting--I will get it to you tomorrow, along with a box to put in your classroom to collect items.)
Please post the list in your classroom and send a copy via email to your class parents.
Don't worry about having the exact address right now--I have it and will provide it when we seal up the packages.
Please use this month to collect items.
At the end of the month, we will ask Room Parents to come in and repack/address the boxes for mailing.

Hello All,Here is my first real update to you from the fine country of Afghanistan. I am currently assigned as the Team Commander for the IRT (Incident Response Team) at one of the FOBs (Forward Operating Base). As the IRT Commander I am responsible to provide security for our EOD Team (Explosive Ordinance Disposal).
When we receive a call that an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) had been detonated or found we will “punch the wire” (leave the FOB) and convoy out to the location at which point EOD will do a post blast analysis to try to determine what the IED was if it has already been detonated or if it hasn’t they will attempt to disarm it or if they can’t they will do a controlled detonation. Due to operational security I can’t tell you how often we punch the wire or where we are going but I can tell you that business is picking up out here.
When we arrived here at the FOB we had to build our own GP tent where we live and operate out of. The entire FOB and area surrounding it is covered in “moon dust” which is very fine sand that comes up to our shins and immediately splashes up into your face and on your uniform. It’s basically tan baby powder everywhere. Imagine walking around in that all day with temperatures close to 120. Needless to say you get very nasty.
We actually have an AC unit in our tent which makes life much more enjoyable here.
We currently operate in heavily armored vehicles here MRAPs and DASHs which make the convoys a little less stressful knowing you are well protected.
As far as what we need, you name it we probably need it. We don’t have an exchange on the FOB, most of the supplies we get are air dropped in by Air Force C-17s every two or three days. The majority of those supplies are immediately given to whatever convoy is punching the wire that day. Below is a list of items that we could use out here if anyone desires to send packages.
baby wipesPowder Drink Mixesrazors (preferably the Mach 3 Turbos)Candy for local kids, we see them sometimesTapatillo Sauce Windex wipesCanned Air!!! Necessary for all the dust.Lysol disinfectant sprayLysol disinfectant wipespens and letter writing gearSurefire flashlight batteriesKetchup (they have none here!)Lastly if anyone would like to do this, you can send me an American Flag with a disposable camera. I will fly it over our FOB, take pictures of the colors ceremony and then send it back to you and you will have an American Flag flown in Afghanistan during military operations.

You can also send letters and/or pictures--(THEY LOVE MAIL!!)--Please include a pre-addressed envelope with a few sheets of blank paper and ask them to drop a quick note when they receive the package.
You may also make a CASH donation that will ONLY be used toward shipping costs.
RESTRICTIONS:
No homemade/homebaked food items. Must be factory sealed packages. Nothing perishable.
We must keep the packages under 10 lbs.; however, we can send up to 3 packages to a single address if needed.
Please do not send illegal copies of ANYTHING.
