Second Grade Rock Unit

We are studying rocks. The students have brought in their collections, and we are having a great time sorting them, and looking carefully at how they are alike or different. We will study how rocks are formed, how rocks are used, how people view rocks from different perspectives, etc.

As a culminating project, each child will prepare an exhibit, or poster to highlight one aspect of rocks. (For example: A poster might show sedimentary rocks have stripes, or how igneous rocks are formed from volcanoes. A collection might show pictures of how rocks are used in everyday life. A sort might be created to show one attribute of rocks. Rocks could be used to create a piece of jewelry or art.)

The main criteria is that the kids think outside the box, and bring their own personalities to this project. They need to create something that shows they have an interesting way to view rocks. Please help them
practice presenting the project orally. Students may not print information from the internet and paste to their project. However, they can print pictures from the internet and attach to their project. All information needs to be in the student’s own words and reflective of their understanding of the topic. These projects will be presented on Monday, November 9.

Please discuss this with your child, and help them get the materials needed to complete this assignment.
The students will be creating their posters and preparing their presentations in class the week of Nov. 2-6. Please send any pictures or research notes that they will need. It would be helpful if you could send a poster board with them by next Monday.
